How YOU can save £1000 in ONE DAY with minimal effort

You know what, you can be ticking along happily on contracts and plans you’ve been on for years, and it’s all well and good until you realise you’re actually paying through the nose for things you don’t need to be.

Cutting £100o out of your outgoings is incredibly easy to do – so it’s worth sitting down every year or so and seeing what can be cut.

Now, this isn’t me saying you can no longer have the movie channel, or you have to sell your car to save on petrol – there are easy ways to keep what you have (or improve it!) for less money.

Get £200 for wearing a uniform to work

If you’re someone who wears a uniform to work, have to wash it yourself, repair or replace it – then you may be entitled to hundreds of pounds of tax back – and you can claim for up to five years in the past.

police uniform

To be able to claim the tax relief, the following four criteria must be met:

  1. You wear a uniform that shows you’ve got a certain job – like a police uniform, or even just a branded t-shirt.
  2. Your employer says you have to wear it.
  3. You have to either at least purchase, clean, repair or replace it yourself.
  4. You’ve paid income tax in the year you’re claiming for.

Just fill out the P87 form, which you can submit online.

Save £295 on gas and electricity

According to a Which? the survey, it says that two-thirds of people have never switched energy provider! The longer you hang around, the less you are rewarded. It’s pretty perverse really.

gas

MoneySavingExpert has said that on average if you switch providers you could save yourself around £295 a year, which is a pretty massive saving.

So to find a bargain, you need a comparison site. MyEnergy has a great free one which lets you see all the best energy deals out there to suit your needs – and it will take less than five minutes of your day.

Haggle down the cost of your broadband and save £300

Your broadband bill is likely to be a sizeable chunk of your outgoings, and like with most companies – the longer you’re there, the worst the deal is likely to be.

When it comes to broadband – new = better, and don’t worry, there are cheeky ways to get out of your current broadband contract.

broadband

Call up and say that you want to cancel your broadband because you’re not happy. Ideally, you want to do a bit of research and see what other cheaper and better deals are out there, so you can benchmark what you want out of the phone call.

Make £200 switching bank accounts

Did you open your current bank account in the 90’s? Heck, did you open it five years ago? If so, switch!

Switching bank accounts totally used to be a faff, but these days, thanks to seven-day switching, all you have to do is fill out a form, and everything else is sorted for you within a week.

bank accounts

Every big bank is likely to have a new joiner incentive and depending on when you’re reading this, they’ll be different – however – as of today HSBC’s best switch bonus is £150 (ooofff!) when you switch, and if you stick around for the year, you’ll get another £50.

Make £30 popping to the shops

jobspotter

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably heard me gabbing on about JobSpotter, which is one of my favourite apps.

I made £30 on my first trip to the shops, but have now accrued over £150 in Amazon vouchers by snapping pictures of ‘for hire’ signs on shop windows.

Reclaim PPI for free and pocket thousands

If you’ve been flogged useless PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) in the fast, don’t pay someone to get the money back, do it yourself for free.

PPI isn’t just sold on mortgages either – it’s on general loans, store cards, car finances – most things.

Not sure if you’ve taken it out – it takes just a second to check. It’s worth reading MoneySavingExpert’s brilliant guide on reclaiming, as it has unbiased tips, as well as the forms you need to fill out.
